How Reiki Works

could help in a limited way, but some were clearly unable, or unwilling, to help themselves to heal; they were relying on the aromatherapy treatments to do it for them. This is not to decry aromatherapy. It is a wonderful therapy that aids many conditions and is now recognized by the NHS. However, there are some hidden conditions that defy orthodox treatments - and aromatherapy - and these were the ones that gave me cause to think deeply. Why were some finding their depression dissipating, while others reported little change? Why did some clients get relief from muscular conditions when others returned after three or four weeks with the same problem? It was not until Reiki found me and entered my life, that I realized the power that the mind and spirit can have over the body, producing very real physical conditions of ill health.

What is Reiki and How does it Work?
I am sure that many readers are aware of Reiki as it becomes more widely talked and written about within the media, but for those who may not be familiar with it I will explain briefly. The word Reiki means 'universal life force energy'. This energy is found all around us.

When we walk along a seashore or in a forest, we are aware of the energizing power of Nature and it is that energy that Reiki practitioners tap into and channel to bring about balance and harmony within the mind, body and spirit. The energy enables the body to begin healing itself, physically and mentally.

Attunement to Reiki
To be able to channel this energy and to help yourself and others, you need to receive Reiki through a process of attunements and initiation. The attunements clear the mind, body and spirit of blockages that would hold back the flow of Reiki energy and the positive power that it brings.

These blockages can be memories that have been hidden away for years and 'forgotten'. They are there, however, and may be holding us back from achieving what we would like to achieve, or they could be making us the person that we are today, for example depressive, negative in thoughts and actions, aggressive or even violent. I believe that we are who we are, by what has happened in our past, and we need to let go to be able to move on. During attunements, carried out by properly qualified Reiki teachers, there are often tears, panic attacks and sometimes laughter! It is all positive and necessary for the unblocking and balancing to take place. The changes might take place immediately or over a period of days or even weeks.

We are all individuals and have individual needs; Reiki will provide what is needed for the healing to take place. When a person has been attuned they can help others. Reiki is with them permanently and will never disappear. You do not have to do anything to release the energy; it is flowing all around you. I am sure that as soon as someone enters your 'space' or auric field, they receive Reiki. Frequently, I have been told that a person feels better simply by sitting beside me, and as some of these people have no knowledge of my having Reiki or do not believe in Reiki, I find their comments interesting!

There are people who are blessed with a natural ability to heal, while others come to healing through Reiki; there are also many different 'styles' of Reiki. Whichever healing pathway you tread, it should be appreciated that the healing energy used comes from the same source, that of the Universe. This realization is especially important when the public is searching for a Reiki healer; the style might be different but the energy is the same.

Reiki is not a religion, nor does it impinge on any belief system. However, many Reiki people find that their spirituality is awakened and that there is a strengthening of their powers of intuition. If I am asked to take someone through a workshop to become initiated into Reiki I always ask, "What has attracted you to Reiki?" If the response is that they think it would be useful to have along with other therapies, I then talk to them at length and impress upon them the power that is Reiki. Should the response to my question be that they do not really know why they have been drawn to Reiki, I welcome them with love.

Yes, Reiki is useful; however, it is much more than that. Reiki changes your way of thinking, of dealing with people and situations. The changes slowly evolve and it is often partners or friends who comment first. You become more positive in your outlook, maintain better health and, should you succumb to an illness, your recovery is more rapid than most. When a would-be student has heard me out, asked questions and thought about what has been said, only then will they be given the opportunity to be attuned to Reiki. They are free to go to another Reiki Master/teacher, but they go with the knowledge that Reiki is more than a 'bolt-on' therapy.

Treatment
In a salon situation, Reiki is used as a treatment that usually lasts for about an hour. The client can be sitting down or lying on their back, front or side. The hands rest gently on or just above, the body. There is no need for clothing to be removed. Reiki can also be used with other therapies. Once a therapist has been attuned to Reiki the energy cannot be 'switched off' and as soon as the therapist touches the client's body the Reiki flows. Should the massage therapist find a tight muscle or stressed ligament, they can simply hold their hands cupped over the problem area to concentrate the energy and so release the tension. Movement around the problem area can often be seen or felt by the therapist as the muscle fibres 'realign'. Heat or extreme cold can be felt when working on the body and limbs and this can alert the therapist to a problem. No diagnosis should be made unless the therapist is medically qualified to do so.

Where is Reiki Used?
Research by members of the UK Reiki Federation shows that Reiki is used in hospices, hospitals, dental surgeries, doctors' surgeries, drug rehabilitation centres, prisons, HIV/AIDS centres, maternity care and mental health units, to name but a few! Responses from Reiki practitioners are all positive and show that Reiki enhances any treatments that are given.

The Integrated Health Care Centre of the Rossendale Centre ran controlled studies to assess the effectiveness of complementary therapies in palliative care. Results show that Reiki was most effective for treatment of depression, showing a dramatic reduction. Reflexology combined with Reiki demonstrated the greatest benefit for the treatment of sleep disturbance. Clients who received Reiki commented:

* "Very relaxing";
* "Increases energy";
* "Feel good for the rest of the week";
* "Keeps me going, I can't explain it".

Case Example 1
A therapist in Mansfield was asked by a local cancer self-help group to visit a young man in the final stages of cancer. He was in tremendous pain and finding sleep impossible. The therapist stayed with him for 45 minutes and when she left he was asleep. He slept soundly for over 8 hours.

Case Example 2
Jan Gentle, a worker at John Eastwood Hospice, gave Reiki to a lady who was very unwell and was experiencing abdominal pain. Jan gave her Reiki without actually touching. When she had finished, the lady whispered that her pain had gone and that she felt she had been surrounded by purple light and felt totally at peace.

Case Example 3
An elderly lady named Evelyn was sad to be told in March 1999 that she had only three months to live. She had secondary lung cancer that caused severe breathlessness and confusion. In the following spring she attended hospital for a scan. The massive ovarian tumour that had shown up previously had disappeared and she was told in the August that she was "not a dying woman"; when asked about the tumour, the consultant replied that "this sometimes happens". Was it spontaneous or did Reiki help? We will never know, but does it matter? Evelyn had two ambitions in 2001; one was to enjoy a holiday with her daughter on a visit from New Zealand in August and the other was to meet the Queen when she opened the Hospice that Evelyn attends, in November. Evelyn achieved both of these ambitions and puts her good health down to the Reiki healing that she receives from her son-in-law who is a qualified Reiki practitioner. She takes no medication, has very little breathlessness, is no longer confused and regularly tells her doctors that it is the Reiki healing that keeps her feeling so well.

There are many more instances of Reiki working wonders in a quiet way, bringing calm and peace to troubled minds and spirits. The more that you work with Reiki the more honoured you feel to have been given this gift to help others. I am constantly amazed and humbled by the power of the energy. It is so simple and yet so powerful.

Conclusion
My personal vision, and I hope the vision of all Reiki practitioners, for Reiki healing is that the whole world should be empowered and blessed with the gift of Reiki. What a wonderful place it would be! We can only make the public more aware of the energy that surrounds us and of the positive effects that it can have on our lives, when it is directed through caring Reiki

MIKAO USUI PRINCIPLES OF REIKI

The origin of Mikao Usui’s precepts
Mikao Usui gave his students a special set of precepts to follow (now referred to as “the Reiki Precepts”) and there has been a lot of speculation about where these precepts came from. It has been claimed that they originated in a book that was published in Usui’s time, and it has been suggested that they are based on the edicts of Mutsuhito, the Meiji Emperor. Certainly it seems that many Tendai and Zen teachers were in Usui’s time passing on principles similar to those of Mikao Usui.

But now we know that Usui’s precepts were his wording of an earlier set of precepts that have been traced back to the early 9th century, precepts that were used in a Tendai sect of Shugendo with which Usui Sensei was in contact. These precepts were a way of addressing aspects of the Buddhist eight-fold path in a simplified form, and they are the very ‘hub’ of the whole system.

These are Mikao Usui’s precepts
Here is the full wording of Mikao Usui’s precepts. The actual precepts start at “just for today” and end with “be compassionate…”:

The secret of inviting happiness through many blessings
The spiritual medicine for all illness

For today only: Do not anger; Do not worry
Be humble
Be honest in your work
Be compassionate to yourself and others

Do gassho every morning and evening
Keep in your mind and recite

The founder, Usui Mikao

REIKI TYPES AND METHODOLOGY

Reiki is a system of holistic healing, a spiritual path, a journey of personal development, or all three united. Though Reiki was introduced by Dr. Mikao Usui, many variations have improved the original system. Today, the traditional Reiki is not the only alternative medicine, but there are many other types of Reiki that are equally beneficial for healing. Since a practitioner is always involved while channelizing the universal life force energy into the recipient, it is probable that he/she might get across some other way of utilizing the energy along the way.

Probably this is why many philosophies and methodologies, combined with Reiki, exist nowadays. Infact, these types of Reiki have become different schools which have their own thought about utilizing the Reiki energy. From the traditional school of Reiki, various masters and practitioners have made their own system. Reiki works pretty well with massage, counseling, nursing, crystals, hypnotism, aromatherapy etc to aid the healing process. The variation among different systems could be due to different symbols, attunements and techniques that often result into different type of energy.

Ancient Egyptian Reiki
Reiki is used to heal people with its energy vibrations all over the world. It is prevalent in different forms and Ancient Egyptian Reiki is one of them.

Angelic Reiki
As everybody knows, Angels are beings who live outside the diverse dimensions and handle the entire working of the Universe.

Crystal Reiki
Crystal Reiki brings to the mind the idea of using crystals along with Reiki. In this therapy, crystals are used, in combination with the healing energy of Reiki.

Dragon Reiki
Dragon Reiki is amongst the most popular forms of the healing art of Reiki. Though the traditional Reiki was initiated in Japan, it spread throughout the world.

Fire Serpent Reiki
Reiki suggests healing, whichever the form it may be. Every healing treatment of Reiki is marked by spiritual symbols, regardless of what form of Reiki is used.

Hypno Reiki
Hypno Reiki is a blend of two wonderful therapies, Hypnosis and Reiki. Reiki is a holistic therapy of healing through universal life force energy.

Karuna Reiki
Karuna Reiki is a system of energetic healing, which was developed by William Rand. This system of healing itself originated from Kathleen Milner's system.

Kundalini Reiki
Kundalini Reiki is regarded as the simplest as well as one of the most effective forms of Reiki.

Rainbow Reiki
Grouping of old and new methods, Rainbow Reiki is a verified system of compound energy work.

Reiki Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is an ancient method of holistic healing using essential oils extracted from plants. It invigorates not only the body, but also mind and spirit.

Tummo Reiki
Tummo Reiki is believed to be the most ancient tradition of Tibet. It is actually a fusion of the Earth core energies.

Sacred Flames Reiki
Like any other form of Reiki, Sacred Flames Reiki (SFR) is a practice of spiritual healing. This powerful and effective system was compiled by Allison Dahlhaus.

Usui Reiki
Usui system of Reiki is essentially the original Reiki that was introduced by Dr. Mikao Usui.

GENDAI REIKI

Gendai Reiki is a type of Reiki that combines traditional methods with specific types of healing training methods that can be used for more recent types of practices. By focusing on spiritual concepts which were taken from ancient Japan, this method allows those interested to use Gendai as a healing method.

The originator of Gendai Reiki in Japan is Heroshi Doi. He was a part of the original system and its founding. The meaning of Gendai is modern and relates to the methods that he established with Reiki. Gendai Reiki, then, can be referred to as a modern style of healing.

There are several unique aspects to Gendai Reiki. Traditional methods are the basis and start for Gendai. Ancient methods and other healing disciplines are incorporated into the training. The method deciphers between these different healing methods by relating it to healing through spiritual means. By keeping this focus, it allowed for the methods in Gendai Reiki to be moved through with this goal.

There are four levels of Gendai Reiki that are taught in Japan with this method: Shoden, Okuden, Shinipiden, and Gokuikaiden. These levels are divided into levels 1 and 2 and master levels 1 and 2. The focus in each of these levels is not only to incorporate what is use in traditional Reiki, but also an incorporation of other spiritual practices that relates to this. At each of these levels, students will be offered attunements, as in the other levels. These are defined in Gendai as empowerment techniques. Unlike regular Reiki, these attunements focus on the spiritual as well as the physical healing aspects, making the attunements vary slightly from person to person.

As time moves on, several traditions have emerged which have changed with the genesis of Gendai Reiki. The founder of this Reiki continues to find improvements to the class and implements different spiritual levels while taking out older traditions in relation to this. Because of these changes, Gendai is constantly adding new techniques, allowing for continuous growth in healing methods and channeling universal energies.

If one is interested in Gendai Reiki, they can either research an area where it is offered, or they can find more details through the book “Modern Reiki Method for Healing.” This was written by the founder and allows for one to find out what the general concepts are in this style of Reiki. The philosophies presented in here allow for a clear focus of what is accepted and what is looked down upon in Gendai Reiki.

Gendai Reiki, while incorporating several techniques from traditional Reiki, challenges the concepts to move a step further and focus on spiritual methods of healing as well as methods using universal energies. By incorporating these two methods as well as using ancient types of practice, Gendai Reiki is able to help one in understanding several different concepts for healing.

CHAKRAS OR VITAL CENTERS

What are Chakras?
Chakras were first found mentioned in ancient Hindu texts in India from as early as 1500 B.C. Chakras are like whirlpools of energy that regulate the flow of chi through and in and out of the body. They flow at different speeds with different vibration frequencies.

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel. There are many ancient versions of chakras but most common is the thought of seven main chakras that correspond to the seven main nerve ganglia that branch off of the spinal column. There are about twenty one minor chakras. Chakras are connected by energy lines in the body that are referred to as nadis. All of these chakra points are used as points in many therapies such as acupuncture, acupressure and cupping.

How Many Chakras are There?

Chakras are constantly moving and they are the energy that creates your aura. Each of the seven layers of the aura is associated with a particular chakra, one of the seven endocrine glands and with a group of nerves called a plexus. Chakras provide energy to the metabolic, glandular, immune, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, reproductive and musculoskeletal systems. They can be damaged by grief, accidents, conflicts, fears, loss, anxiety and stress. This can lead to many diseases and disorders. Many believe that the health of our chakras determines the health of our bodies.

The First Chakra is called the Root Chakra and it is located at the base of the spine. This chakra influences the spinal column, the legs and feet, kidney, rectum, immune system, bladder, blood and the male reproductive organs.
The Second Chakra is called the Sacral Chakra and it is located below the navel. This chakra is involved with the kidney, bladder, pancreas, sex organs, skin, stomach, spleen, liver, gall bladder, upper intestines and the middle of the spine.
The Third Chakra is called the Solar Plexus Chakra and it is located above the navel behind the solar plexus. This chakra relates to the kidney, stomach, spleen, liver, gall bladder, upper abdomen, digestive tract, adrenals, small intestines and the middle of the spine.
The Fourth Chakra is called the Heart Chakra and it is located at the middle of the chest. The Heart Chakra corresponds to the heart, blood, lungs, esophagus, breasts, arms and hands, circulatory system, rib cage, thymus, shoulders and diaphragm.
The Fifth Chakra is called the Throat Chakra and it is located at the middle of the throat. The Fifth Chakra has interactions with the lungs, esophagus, arms, thyroid, throat, trachea, neck vertebrae, mouth, teeth, gums and nerves.
The Sixth Chakra is called the Brow Chakra and it is located at the center of the forehead. This unique chakra, sometimes referred to as the third eye, finds its connection with the Pineal gland, ears, eyes, nose, Pituitary gland and the brain.
The Seventh Chakra is called the Crown Chakra and it is located at the top of the head. This chakra effects the brain, the nervous system and the Pineal and Pituitary glands.

REIKI METHODOLOGY

Kundalini Reiki

The teachings behind Kundalini reiki are very simple. Kundalini, a character from Hindu mythology, is referred to as the dormant energy (the Kundalini energy is also referred sometimes as the Kundalini Fire) that lies in every person. Kundalini can be imagined and depicted as a coiled serpent goddess, who is lying asleep around the main chakra. In Kundalini reiki the unleashing of the dormant strong Kundalini energy in order to heal one's self is what is all about. Once this is obtained, people get into a state of peacefulness, calmness and relaxation. In this type of Reiki a very simple process is followed that only requires meditation and visualization from your part to release the healing energy (kundalini energy) that is already inside you.

Shamanic Reiki

This is a special type of Reiki in which traditional reiki concepts are somehow infused with shamanic concepts. Traditionally, shamanism means the spiritually centered lifestyle of the “Shaman.” The term Shaman refers to the person in a tribe who is spiritual leader. Shamans are also the keepers of their community ceremonies and traditions. Humans thrive on symbolism, rituals, patterns and reiki has many symbols, rituals, and a pattern for self-healing purposes. Here is perhaps where shamanism and Reiki come together to create a special system for self-transformation, a system for living. In shamanism as well as in Reiki, everything is viewed as connected, from the biological body to the spiritual body. Any imbalance in any area can be “corrected” by specially designed and teachable shamanic reiki attunements (symbols, rituals, ceremonies) that will be “passed on” during shamanic reiki training.

Saku Reiki

In addition to traditional reiki principles and training, Saku reiki practitioners utilize a comprehensive approach to self healing that includes some natural therapies, nutrition concepts and practices, physical exercises, crystal and vibrational healing, etc. Saku Reiki originated and is the result of knowledge accumulated from a special clinic that focused on treating patients that did not responded to traditional western medical practice. Saku Reiki is a combination of traditional Usui Reiki with other alternative self-healing methods. Saku reiki training includes three levels as well as in traditional reiki training. However, in level I, the Saku Reiki program includes, in addition to the Reiki I program, healing the body through nutrition and other physical means.

Many types of reiki exist. Although the methodology may be different from one type to another one thing remain constant and that is the concept of Universal Energy. This is the essence of reiki no matter which type you choose to follow.

ENERGY CHAKRAS

Seven Main Chakra Points

The human aura, or energy field, is broken up into hundreds of important areas. Called chakras, these areas relate to the senses, specific organs and even spiritual abilities. There are seven chakra points in particular that metaphysical healers and those interested in chakra meditation often focus upon.

The seven main chakra points are considered vortexes. Through these vortexes, energy can enter and leave a human body. This energy can have an effect on the mental, spiritual, emotional and physical aspects of a person.

The chakra points that make up the main seven are:

The root – This chakra is found near the very bottom of the spine at the coccyx. This energy point is related to the adrenal glands, the spinal column, prostate, blood, kidneys, colon and anus. This chakra is often associated with primal energy and can have an impact on self image, as well. When this chakra is awakened it can lead to primal intelligence. It is associated with dark orange or red.

The sacral – Located about three inches below the naval, this chakra point is associated with the gonads, the ovaries or testicles and reproduction. This particular point on the aura is often linked to emotional states, sexuality and vitality. When this chakra is fully awakened a person can gain a clearer insight into birth and death or creation and destruction. It is associated with the color orange.

The solar plexus – This point is associated with the pancreas, stomach, liver, gall bladder and nervous system. It is considered the power center of the body and is often related to personal will, as well. When this chakra is awakened, it can enhance personal power. This point is associated with the color yellow.

The heart – This chakra is related to the thymus and is said to govern the blood, vagnus nerve, circulatory system and, of course, the heart. This chakra is often seen as the bridge between the astral and physical worlds and is the location of the astral body. It is also the center of intuitiveness, compassion and love. When this chakra is awakened it raises awareness about others and empathy. It is associated with the color green.

The throat – This chakra is found in the throat area and is associated with the thyroid. It is said to govern the lungs, alimentary canal and bronchial and vocal abilities. This particular aura point is heavily connected with self-expression, communication, the spoken word and sound. When it is awakened a person might gain clairaudience and higher communication abilities. It is associated with light blue colors.

The brow – This aura point, found between the eyebrows, is linked to the pituitary gland and is said to have an effect on the nervous system, lower brain, nose and ears. Often called the third eye, this chakra can raise astral awareness and the ability to see into other dimensions when meditating. It is associated with dark blue or indigo.

The crown – Located at the top of the head, this chakra is linked to the pineal gland and has control of the upper brain. It is often associated with deep peace, bliss and nirvana. When fully active, it can help a person gain a greater understanding of intelligence, wisdom and life in general. Powers gained from its awakening include astral projection. It is associated with many colors including silver white, white, gold and violet white.

Chakra points are an essential part of many metaphysical pursuits as they are the windows into the body for positive and negative energies. A mastery of these points can assist with healing and self-advancement.

REIKI A HEALING WAY

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life.

Its use is not dependent on one's intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

During a meditation several years after developing Reiki, Dr. Usui decided to add the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came in part from the five prinicples of the Meiji emperor of Japan whom Dr. Usui admired. The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for her or his healing and take an active part in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of the Reiki energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself in order for it to be a complete system. The ideals are both guidelines for living a gracious life and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value.
